V for Vendetta
Mar. 26th, 2006 07:51 pmI was originally worried about this film. From the few scenes on the Daily Show as part of an interview, I was worried it dealt with psychological torture like Saw or something, which I'm not remotely interested in seeing. It didn't, and overall I quite enjoyed it. Think 1984 dystopia meets The Counte of Monte Cristo.
A lot of film critics seem to see this film as "anti-Bush", which is interesting because there is only a passing reference to anything in modern American politics which is basically just a link to the Iraq war in the 'future history' back-story. If anything, people's connection of constant fear-mongering, security in exchange for privacy, and demonization of the different in the film to Bush is more a reflection of his administration than anything to do with the film itself. The timing is pure marketing strategy. I'm sure right-wingers are going to continue with their 'blame the messenger' attacks, as this film's pro-individual, pro-gay and human rights, pro-democracy subtext is the stuff 'secular intellectual liberal elitism' is made of.
As a note, the films' contribution to the Cult of Natalie Portman expands her appeal to schoolgirl fetishists and lesbian chicks who dig butch girls.
