A while back [livejournal.com profile] jeliza et al gave me a copy of Charles Stross' Halting State. On my 7+ hour flight back home Monday I had plenty of time to read it.

Like most of Stross' books, the protagonists are geeks. It's a heady blend of sci-fi fueled MMORPGs, VR game development, cryptography, EU politics, and futuristic infowar. What's not to love about a click-through EULA that makes you an unwitting spy? It's also doubles as a 350+ page setup for a Nigerian spammer joke. While it lacks the Cthulu joy of The Atrocity Archives and The Jennifer Morgue, it keeps with his snappy dialog and ever-unfolding plot. The fact that it is all written in the chapter-rotating second person takes some getting used to but it provides for much fun.

"Why? Because I got a little too clever and let slip the yipping Chihuahuas of infowar."

The Jennifer Morgue is Charles Stross' follow-up to The Atrocity Archives and I just finished it on my flight home today. The original book is best described as HP Lovecraft's Cthulu meets Ian Fleming's Bond meets Scott Adams' Dilbert. These books should have a sticker that reads "You must be this geeky to ride this ride," but for the initiated they rock. The new book embraces the echoes of James Bond so much that they form an integral part of the plot. Throw in the Deep Ones, the damned women of Insmoth, deeply disturbing daemon erotica, and serve it up with a USB flash drive and constant references to Windows Media Center and Windows Vista.

[livejournal.com profile] hdan: If you are not reading these books, there is only one rational reason for it that would permit the existence of a loving god in the multiverse: you actually write under the pen name of Charles Stross.
