loree and friends Friday night, and again with some of my gaming buddies Saturday night. Quite enjoyable both times, and basically the same movie I saw the sneak of a few months back. So twice on opening weekend is my part in helping the success of the film and hopefully the return of Firefly. My parents, who I managed to hook on the show via a set of DVDs sent for Father's Day, called me Saturday night to say they just saw the movie themselves. Now we just need to get my brother hooked.
( My only complaint... (potential very minor spoiler) )

May. 6th, 2005 03:11 amSerenity was perfect. The chemistry was still there, secrets revealed, tragic turns, lovers reunited, lovers parted, witty banter, and a lot of serious ass-kicking action!
For anyone who loved the Firefly series, this is defintely well worth the wait. Since they aren't releasing it until late Sept, I wouldn't be suprised if they make some changes before then, but it was a fabulous experience to see it with so many hard-core fans.
Keep watch here for more!

Update: FYI - The movie is scheduled for release September 30th.

Firefly redux
Feb. 21st, 2005 09:06 pmOh my god. What were the folks who cancelled Firefly thinking?! It was a truly great show and some imminently quotable stuff:
If you enjoyed the story detail of Babylon 5, the character development of Farscape, and have a weakness for old-school Westerns, you'll probably enjoy Firefly. The DVDs are well worth the time and money to check out, and look for the movie in September.
Jayne: "I don't know these folks. Don't much care to."Unlike so much on television, it was unique and interesting. I'm really looking forward to the feature film. How well it will translate to the big screen is hard to judge, and frankly a lot of people just don't get it. Of course, crap like Freddy vs. Jason gets funded, so you'd think people would let potentially 'niche' movies have their moment in the sun. I hardly think everything Joss Whedon does is gold, but this one is something special.
Mal: "They're whores."
Jayne: "I'm in."
Wash: "That sounds like something out of science-fiction."
Zoe: "You live on a spaceship, dear."
Wash: "So?"
Jayne: "Here's a little concept I've been working on - how about we shoot (Patience) first?"
Wash: "It is her turn."
Jayne: (drinking tea) "This ain't bad."
Badger: "There's a trick to it. Wood alcohol."
Mal: "So now we're favored guests, treated to beverages that make you blind."
Jayne: "We was just about to spring into action, Captain. Complicated escape and rescue op."
Wash: "Very exciting. I was going to watch."
Wash: (talking about Jayne's statue) "I think they captured his essence."
Kaylee: "It looks kind of angry."
Wash: "That's what I meant."
Jayne: "Hey, do you have any funny whorin' stories?"
Inara: "Oh, do I ever! Funny and sexy. You have no idea. And you never will."
Book: "I'd forgotten -- you're moonlighting as a criminal mastermind now."
Simon: "No, but I'm thinking about growing a big black mustache. I'm a traditionalist."

Jan. 15th, 2005 11:02 pmBack when Firefly first aired, I didn't watch. I was bitter about the cancellation of Farscape--which ended on a cliff-hanger for Christ sakes---and frankly I'm not that big a Joss fan. That being said, I saw an eps on DVD a week or so ago and decided to check out the whole series. So far, it is damn good and very compelling. Of course, it has been cancelled too. Seems like any interesting and innovative television either gets cancelled or turned into something crappy, so I'm not surprised that the networks just didn't get this show. As I was talking with loree about the other night, Americans like to pretend that no one in this country was ever on the losing side of a conflict and fighting back in petty, if satisfying, ways. Besides, it is hard to make anything Sci-Fi for networks that doesn't fall neatly into the "Its like Star Trek only..." category.
Had a nice phone conversation with Andrea tonight. Just chit-chat. Even over the phone the things about her personality that attracted me to her in the first place come through loud and clear. She implied that perhaps the reason I'm watching Firefly now is that I know it is doomed and that somehow that's the kind of thing I actually seek out.
I resemble that remark.
I do miss that girl, but at this point I'm just happy we can be friends, or long distance phone/pen pals, or whatever it is a relationship where you love someone but never see them and maybe talk to them on the phone once every few months when it isn't family is called. I learned the hard way you don't often get the choice about whether or not to let someone you love go. Not a pleasant lesson, but an important one. Frankly not something I really have the faintest idea how to do efffectively either.
Anyhow, pretty quiet weekend so far spent mostly doing housework, erranding, and stocking up on groceries. I spent almost the entire week going to training and then staying in all night. Between being sick and it being bitterly damn cold, I didn't really feel like getting out much. I did have some friends over for the weekly game, and finally made it out Friday night for dinner withloree and then hanging out watching This is Spinal Tap.
royalbananafish is supposedly in town, but I'm not sure I'll be seeing her. I'm hoping to talk her into brunch at Alki Cafe tomorrow morning, but we'll see. jeliza and I have a date for tomorrow night, which I'm looking forward to.
Oh, I picked up Tegan & Sara's album So Jealous. As a review on Amazon says, yes they are identicial twin lesbian sisters even though that sounds like the setup for a joke. They opened for Melissa Ferrick the last time she came through town and I liked them. They have a punk sound, but a lot of that Indigo Girls style harmony. Besides, they are identicial twin lesbians and what's not to love about that. They had this sort of Donny & Marie banter dynamic on stage, which also made for much amusement, so I'll be keeping an eye out for future gigs in the area.
