I went to my first ballet ever tonight with
cuddlyeconomist for a Seattle production of Romeo & Juliet. While most of it baffled me, I have come to realize I rather like live full orchestral performances.
The good: While the set was a modern minimalist affair, the lighting effects were very well done. The music was beautiful, although at one moment I was convinced they were about to play Darth Vadar's Theme.
The bad: The Friar's choreography seemed a bit too much like Mime. A puppet show, which in fact re-enacted the entire story of Romeo & Juliet in about 1 minute ("They put puppets in my ballet!"). Pirates!, well it was supposed to be a masked ball but the result was a bit too piratey for the piece. Jawas!, well really it was supposed to be mourners in the dark.
Margo has season passes, so I'm sure there will be future posts on my introduction to this particular entertainment artform.
