Gamestorm and the Land of Port

I made it to my one Living Greyhawk game this morning, which turned out to be a 2-round module instead of just one. It was probably just as well since (a) getting this module done in another setting would be difficult, (b) it was a great module for my pirate chock full of nautical goodness, and (c) I did in the end register for the convention, drive all the way to Portland and back, and stay in a hotel for just one adventure so it might as well go long.
I made plans with
royalbananafish for an early dinner, and then called Andrea to join us. I figured it was a neutral venue to renew our acquaintance since we hadn't really seen each other since 2003--and even then it was a short and uncomfortable experience. She made some noises in e-mail a year or so ago about trying to keep in touch with friends, but she's pretty terrible about correspondence in general. As it turned out, Liz never called back (she was doing something else this weekend, natch, which I guess ran long).
It was a good conversation and meal with Andrea, and I got to tell some of my stories of the past few years to a new audience. We spoke about work, goings on with my family, and about her work as well. I don't know if we'll ever actually speak again for another 2 to 4 years, but she is always pleasant company. There were plenty of silly threads of conversation as we fell into our old cadence, which I have to say I missed having more regularly. I've found aspects of that in more recent friendship, so I'm not terribly sad about it like I might have been a few years back, but it wouldn't really be me if it didn't have some aspect of bittersweet to it. At least for this girl, it's more sweet than bitter.
The only really downer to the weekend is that I left my favorite pillows down in Portland in the hotel. I brought them along since I was sharing the room, and frankly I like having them to improve my chances of a good night's sleep. Hopefully they will find them and be able to send them back, but I think I will miss having them this week. On the other hand, this cough is lingering on enough that I'm going to end up sleeping propped way up (ala the Elephant Man) to try to make sure it doesn't become bronchitis as it's threatening to do, so I'll be sleeping strangely anyhow. Maybe it's time to break out the Nyquill again.
