Since I was downtown for a conference, I figured I might as well make a night of it and went to see Stardust with
loree and
tithonium. It was quite entertaining, funny, and even sweet and the effects were pretty cool. It's chock full of stereotypes, but if you think of it as more of a 'fractured fairy tale' it's nothing too outrageous. The previews before the film make it clear that the demographic is assumed to be 'kids family film', but there's plenty of content that will make groups that like the words "Family", "America", and "Heritage" as code-words for Christian Conservatives have a fit. They probably do approve of the "trio of evil witches" part.
I rather enjoyed the anthropomorphism of stars as cute blonde girls that fall from space. It reminded me of the rather fun subplot in Andromeda with Trance as an avatar of a sun.
I'm sad to see my only true celebrity crush, Michelle Pfeiffer, being cast as one of said witches, but she's clearly having a good time with it. Hmmm, maybe I should watch Ladyhawke again to remember the good old days. Then again, the core story of Stardust was one of those classic romance tales of finding "true love" and living happily ever after, and while it was good I felt a bit emo and lonely on the drive home. Ladyhawke is more of the same.
