Home from my overnight trip down to San Francisco. I got the full business traveler experience: rental car, arriving at a somewhat extravagant hotel so late and leaving so early as to spend barely 8 hours there, all day business meetings with a working lunch, and a late-night flight home. I ran into Intel and IBM consultants as well as other Microsofties doing similar trips in fact. I thought I was being frugal by renting a car, but then the hotel boned me for the parking ($45 a night + 14% tax). There is something deeply broken about an economy where the cost to rent a car for a day is the same as the cost to park one.

Because of the new flight restrictions, I checked a bag for the first time in 5 years--the last time I believe was when I flew out to Seattle with Koshka as my carry-on. The bag only had my first-aid kit and my shaving kit. The overhead compartments on the flights were barely used, while the baggage check and pick-up was a zoo. At least I was flying a few days after the real panic and wasn't harassed for having chap stick in my pocket.

By the time I got all the way to my gate for my flight home, I had about 20 minutes to eat. I got a tuna sandwich and then figured I'd eat it on the flight. I didn't buy a drink because I knew it was not going to be allowed on when it occurred to me that mayonnaise fit the TSA's description of a 'banned liquid'. It's a colloidal emulsion and pretty damn similar to a cream. Thankfully saner thoughts than my own prevailed or there would've been a...
