Beautifully done.

I wish Bryan Singer had finished out X-Men 3 before taking this gig, but I was quite pleased with the results. An homage to the fabulous films of 1978 and 1980 (I'm ignoring the atrocity of making a Superman film into a Richard Prior comedy sketch), it recreated the musical score, the title sequence, and Christopher Reeves' rendition of Clark. The casting seemed to be trying to appeal to the fans of Smallville, but frankly I thought Margo Kidder's Lois was a bit of a skank.

Some of the buzz I've heard from others is that they felt it was sad, but personally I felt it was more bittersweet than sad. Superman has always been a solitary super hero, and I thought the script did an admirable job of playing up his loneliness, his compassion for the human race, and his painful obsession with Lois and the life he can't really have. Great effects, great action sequences, and well done characters.

Thank you, Hollywood, for not raping my childhood this time.
