Mar. 1st, 2006 11:15 pmKoshka went to the vet today for an ultrasound check on her heart murmur. She's apparently doing fine, or more technically "the condition has not progressed". More or less she's doing fine despite the heart condition but they pointed out that other common age-related problems can trigger heart failure in such a cat, or treatment for such conditions can (anesthesia or fluid therapy for example). So, we keep doing blood-work every six months, keep her on the kidney-friendly diet, and hope for the best.
The truth is that I've really never faced death up close. The only beloved pets I had a child that died in my presence were hamsters. Koshka has been my only live-in companion for eight years, going on nine, and I don't know that the house will feel right when she's gone. As an adult, she's the only pet I've ever had.
Still, creatures grow old and pass away. At this point, I'm just grateful her (and my) quality of life is good.
In other news, my parent's sent me some birthday presents from Amazon.com today. It was three items from my wish list: two technical programming books and a DVD of The Incredibly True Adventure of 2 Girls in Love. I think at this point that the only possible focus-marketing demographic bucket I fit in for a retailer is a male-to-female transgender, one of the many tall geek women with laptops and adam's apples. Alas, they would be wrong and I simply will continue to confuse people by being a straight computer geek male with really strange tastes in film and music.
As my brother once said when my parent's kept asking what it means that I like chick rock and lesbian films: "I think it means he likes girls."
