Had a good time at the Poly Third Place weekly dinner last night... Met some new people, including a guy named Tom Smart. He reminded me in a lot of ways of my Austin friend Michael Van Slyke. It was great conversation, and probably a fun comedy show for everyone else there.

I can probably count the number of good male friends I've had on my fingers... Thinking back, I've always had difficulties with 'guy' friends outside of work and gaming. I'm sure a psychologist would point out that the fact that my father is fairly distant emotionally contributes to my perception. As a child of the military, I moved at a lot and was always on the outskirts of the social setting in my school and neighborhood. As such, my friends were usually those boys who weren't all that well-adjusted. Little betrayals in those years have colored my relationships with other men.

That pattern has seemed to repeat itself over the years... My best friend in high school, a long-time adult friend in college, the men in the couples my ex and I hung out with when we were together, even one of my ex business partners. As with any perceived pattern, I remember the 'hits' more vividly than the relationships that didn't fit the pattern but I think it is fair to say it is a recurring theme.

Really my best male friend is Dan. I've known him since college, worked with him at 3 jobs over 8 years, and he was one of my business partners--not the one that wanted out and forced us into shutdown. I miss working with him day-to-day. Having someone who gets your sense of humor and play off one-another is a rare occurrence and I must say it brought a lot of joy to my life.
