One of my new year's weekend rituals is to put all the year's semi-sorted bills, statements, etc. into folders and file them--a system established by [livejournal.com profile] appleang actually. In the process, I take the stuff from seven years ago and shred it. This year, 1997 is scheduled for destruction.

1997 seemed like a good year at the time. My game company was working on several projects, graduate school was fun, and things generally were busy but rewarding. Kim and I had a really rough first part of that year, but the last half was probably the most peaceful and enjoyable of our entire relationship. Yet, so much of that happiness was unsustainable. Kim never really wanted it to last long term, Angela was not happy with the lack of attention and focus from me with so much else going on in my life, and it all started to fall apart on New Year's Eve 1997.

Still, for many years that followed '97 was the last time I remembered really being happy with my life and it was difficult to let go of the memories.

Rest in peace, 1997.
