Wilford Visit
May. 17th, 2009 10:50 pmWe found out this morning that mom is getting transfered over to Bamsey (the Army hospital where they will be doing the surgery) tomorrow morning. My dad and brother took first shift with mom, while
cuddlyeconomist and I did some rescheduling of travel arrangements and some other remote work. We then went over and spent the afternoon with her sending Todd and dad out to get a decent meal and do some erranding. Once she goes to Bamsey, we will be limited to normal visting hours and won't get the 'family of staff' treatment.
Assuming her transfer goes fine--she's been stable for a few days awaiting the surgery--we'll be heading to Houston for an overnight Monday so
cuddlyeconomist can get some bonus time with Rhys. We'll come back Tuesday to visit mom some more. Her sister Meredith is actually coming in Tuesday as well from Florida--we've been trying to get her to come visit for a decade, and the last time she came to Texas was for Edna's funeral.
Got some more details on the medical situation. It seems that she indeed had a heart attack, but it was mild and did not significantly damage the heart. The problem is that when they tried to get the clots out that caused it, they discovered they were not cholesterol plaques but rather calcium deposits. The stent was just not up crushing rocks. Hence they are planning to do a triple bypass procedure to get around the blockage. As I noted yesterday the surgery is routine enough. It's the risk factors of complications in anethesia and recovery that are making everyone nervous.
Around 6:30p or so mom decided she was done with company, but wanted dad to stay a while longer. Todd, Margo, and I went to dinner and then to see Star Trek. We saw it before in IMAX with Rhys, but Todd had not. It held up to a second viewing. Since we were not sitting too close to a six-story screen, it was easier to see some of the smaller details. Still "Fun, Watchable" with a disappointingly coherent plot.
