"you left me half full half full of emptiness
all bothered and bloodshot putting my hand to my head
and you smelled like denial and my beer tasted like chalk
but I remember the sound of your footsteps like a ticking pocket watch

'cause I don't forget anything it scares me half to death
and I remember the color of the door knob, baby, that you used when you left"
-- Melissa Ferrick When You Left

I've joked with some friends of late that I'd have made a good lesbian folk singer if it wasn't for the pesky lack of musical training and being the wrong gender. I can say, however, that had I been a lesbian folk singer, I'd have been Melissa Ferrick. She's the same age and clearly has similar problems with "moving on".

During the concert Saturday she babbled a fair amount between songs. At one point she said "So I've been in this relationship for the last 3 years. Well, she doesn't know it or want it but it is going well for me... I've gotten a lot of songs out of it." She apparently calls this girl up every now and than, always getting an answering machine, and leaves a message. Recently the girl decided to pick up the phone, and Melissa was obviously panicked. The girl then says "the connection is really bad so I can only hear every three words you say, so you better make them count". Bingo, new song. Every Three Words is a plea for hope, for some sign that the love she felt might actually go somewhere, serve some purpose besides making her miserable and clingy. While that place isn't quite as intense for myself these days, I can recall spending years there. It is amazing how powerful and real love can feel even when it isn't returned...

A lot of Melissa's songs deal with the loneliness she feels on the road, the joy of having the gift of song and the trap of never being in a place long enough to actually fulfill the needs of her heart. Yet, she chooses the lonely path because it is the right one for her. That too is something I respect and understand.

So, support my musical career and check out Melissa Ferrick's music... I think more new fans would be great :>
