Apr. 6th, 2004 03:27 pmWhew! I guess I can keep my "honorary lesbian" card after all: I just picked up Melissa Etheridge's and the Indigo Girl's latest albums over lunch. I was mostly waiting until it was clear I wasn't getting any of them for my birthday, and while I wasn't sure about MLE's album based on the reviews, I am a completest after all and it would be a shame to be missing only one of her discs from my collection.
At
kerri_tgrl's party this past weekend, we were commiserating about Melissa Ferrick and the upcoming Ani Difranco concert when Kerri said "you know Chuck, if you have any gender issues you want to discuss, you know where to find me." It was amusing, and I realize my tastes probably signal classic gender dysphoria, but I really am 100% clear on my gender and sexuality. Sure, I cry at chick flicks that I go out of my way to see in the theatre--as
loree can attest--, know the entire Indigo Girl's catalog by heart and sing along in my car and at concerts, and regularly attend Ani Difranco and Melissa Etheridge concerts. Sure, I despise sports, particularly televised sports, excepts women's nine-ball pool and tennis. Sure, my apartment is neat and orderly. Yes, I find the Man Show fairly offensive.
Despite all this, I'm clearly a heterosexual male.
Now, if there is a gender identification for heterosexual men that are otherwise 'lesbian' then maybe that would work, but I don't think "Dutch boy" is all that flattering. In addition to all the above, I'm also engage in classic nerd/geek behavior. I'm a computer game programmer and have been playing with computers and electronics since I was eleven. I'm 33 and still play Dungeons & Dragons... a lot... even when I have a girlfriend--although perhaps increased availability of said girlfriend might require choosing to lessen the gaming.
I guess if there was some magic way to become a girl, I might consider it. I don't think I'd make a really pretty girl, but if the breasts and ovaries came with any musical talent I'd given 'lesbian folk-singer' a real go... The truth is, I'm pretty happy with myself and my sexual experiences. So what if I don't fit into any neat classification... that's most of the fun.
