Apr. 4th, 2004 12:48 pmI'm a bit behind on my 'lesbian music collection'... I need to get the latest Indigo Girls album, and I'm still debating on Melissa Etheridge's newest album Lucky. A review of it was something along the lines of "Etheridge's most upbeat and happy album to date", which for some reason doesn't really appeal to me as much as her earlier stuff. Glad MLE is happy, not that interested in her new sound. Oh well, at least I have found Melissa Ferrick, who is unabashedly screwed up and expresses it in her music.
I did pick up Penelope Swales Homemade Wine recently... Like much of the more folky music out there, it took a while to grow on me, but I really like several of the songs. Yesterday was my third listen of the entire album, and the song Waterclock stands out as my favorite... Like many songs that I really love, this one encasulates my feelings for particular events in my life in ways I can't really express directly... I also really like Swallow and the title song Homemade Wine.
"now I'm feeling strong
look whose come around to visit me
I have said all along
that I would never never turn my face away
and this big waterclock
these salt water tears
spins around to spill and refill again
its been wheeling inside me
week-in and week-out
turn around spill and refill again
you have always been incalculably precious to me
through our friendship and our blossoming
through our hard times
and then the time you turned away from me
and started this waterclock
these salt water tears
spin around to spill and refill again
its been wheeling inside me
week-in and week-out
turn around to spill and refill again
and I have missed you daily and nightly
I miss the insights you brought my life
I have been left face to face with my mistakes
and still I think you left me for the wrong reasons
despite all my heresy and treasons
now you will sit so tentatively and quietly
in the glow of hindsight you see what I brought to your life
I've no desire to rub your face in your mistakes
but still I think you left me for the wrong reasons
and now you stop to see what I mean
and I'd love to forgive you
but you gotta know
that there's been this big waterclock
these salt water tears
spin around to spill and refill again
and its gonna take me a little time to dry out
turn around spill and refill again
its been wheeling inside me
day week and month out
and when it turns around
it just starts to refill again
what is it about you
I get on with my life
and when you turn around
I feel my heart fill again
spin around spill and refill again
so I pour my love out on the ground
you gotta know"
