SIGGRAPH Day 1
Aug. 11th, 2008 05:31 pmToday I got up super early and flew down to Los Angeles for SIGGRAPH. In short, I hate LA. It is the very heart of the overpopulated, unsustainable economic and ecological disaster that is California. Due to timing of when we could book our arrangements for the conference, most of my co-workers and I all ended up at the further-most out hotel, resulting in a hour-long shuttle wait and ride to and from the conference all week. At least the hotel itself doesn’t suck.
SIGGRAPH seems to have made a lot of changes this year. The Electronic Theater event that used to repeat over the show seems to have been replaced with an Animation Festival ceremony and a few sponsored theater sessions from Pixar, Sony, and ILM. They combined the technical program and rebranded a few things (Class instead of Course, Talk instead of Sketch, etc.). Instead of running Sun-Thur, they are running Mon-Fri. It should be interesting to see how it all works.
I ran into my graduate advisor from UT in the hall. Last time I saw him was when
jeliza and I were on that silly Academic Alliance cruise a few years back. I guess with my 20th High School Reunion this year, I should get used to being a "student from long ago"...
