The Dark Ages: Redux
Dec. 15th, 2006 03:40 pmI lost power at the house a bit after midnight, and the historic wind storm made for some very exciting sounds most of the night. Shortly after I awoke this morning to a cold, dark house and a very pushy cat,
loree called to say that she and
datavore had just driven by my house and saw some roof damage. Sure enough a few dozen shingles were torn off leaving an exposed area about 9' by 12' in size as well about 4-5 'corner cover' pieces from another part of the roof.
The good news is that was the extent of the damage to my property. There are a lot of trees down all over the Puget Sound, many of which landed on cars, houses, or fences. I needed to get some roofing work done anyhow. Thanks to some advice from
loree, I got the damage covered up with some tarps and boards. The Home Depot was very busy this morning, with many people purchasing stacks of cheap roof shingles.
Most of the city is still in the dark. The entire Microsoft campus is without power, so my last day of training was cancelled. I drove around a bit and found that the Junction in West Seattle is still on the grid, so I'm sitting in Cupcake Royale bumming Internet and a charge for both my laptop and phone. Seattle City Light says it may take 24-48 hours to get the power back. While my heat runs off it's own supply of oil, the fan and thermostat require electricity. Thankfully my hot-water heater holds plenty of water for a shower this morning to warm up. I may be pulling my propane stove and latern out of the shed tonight.
