Pseudo-parenthood
Jul. 3rd, 2009 02:49 pmRhys has been in Seattle with
cuddlyeconomist and I for about two weeks. He is staying 3 weeks, going back to Texas for 2 weeks, then back for 3 more weeks this year. Likely next year he'll come for the whole summer, but with this arrangement being new to all involved it seemed to make sense to split it up the first time around. My primary experience as a quasi-parental figure so far has been making a lot of lunches. The original plan had been for Margo to take Rhys on the bus on her way to work and/or school, but it requires getting up even earlier so instead I've been driving them in the mornings. Sometimes she takes the bus home, sometimes not. While Margo is not a fan of the bus situation (work pays for it, but the traffic delays really stretch out an already longish bus commute), Rhys gets upset when they don't take the bus. Getting up routinely before 8am has never been on my TO DO list, but with Seattle summer it's been pretty nice to enjoy the many long hours of sunlight. Rhys spent last week at the YMCA summer program during the workdays, and this week at the Seattle Science Center. He seems to be having a reasonably good time.
Last week we bought bikes--Margo already had a bike and just got a bike rack for her vehicle--, which meant I had my first experience in assembling a child's toy under time pressure. Damn are those directions useless. Due to the timing of the purchase, naturally he ended up with a Transformers branded bike.
In a related "Christ, I'm really an adult now" development: I bought a lawn-mower. I had been paying a service since I got the house, but it seemed like a rip-off to mow the 5 square feet of actual grass when the new lawn was growing in, so I borrowed my neighbor's electric mower. After a few uses, and the fact that the new lawn configuration is pretty easy to mow, I decided to keep doing it myself.
