Weekend

A busy and fun weekend. My friend [livejournal.com profile] mielikki flew up from Austin to see the Dalai Lama and Dave Matthews event Friday. I personally didn't go as Dave Matthews is not really my kind of music, but I was happy to play host and give her crash space for her trip. Lots of good eating out and chit-chat. She made it home safe Saturday. Given that she had booked American Airlines flights, it was rather worrisome about whether or not she would make it out and make it back as planned. Then again, I've not had a flight experience in months that wasn't delayed.

BTW She sent me some fun links: D&D Monsters Parts 1, 2, and 3 [www.bookofratings.com].

Saturday night was our monthly D&D game. Instead of our usual games at the game store in Redmond, we played at someone's home instead. Last month's game was a bit distracting, so it was good to have a bit more privacy and quality control on the players at the table. Yes, I'm a gaming snob. It happens after six years of convention gaming. As [livejournal.com profile] jeliza has been sick, sick, sick this week and Sean is out of town anyhow, we didn't manage a date this weekend. Hopefully soon.

Friday and Saturday I stayed up late playing Lord of the Rings Online. And by late I mean basically all night until the wee hours of the morning. For some months, my kinship (the LOTRO version of a "Guild") of mostly Aussies (hence the strange hours) have been trying to get the Balrog down in the big instance added for the Book 10 update. It takes a long time to get through the seven boss stages leading up to him (which is really 7 big fights, plus 2 more that you have to do over if you die), and they are all somewhat complex. The instance resets every week, so we try every few days. You can see one of our close, but not quite attempts. Saturday night we got the thing down to 231 morale (aka hit-points), down from it's 225,000 morale, on our first go. We finally won on the second attempt of the night. Naturally as with all these MMO big end-game instances, we have to do it many times over to get the cool toys to everyone, but we did get the trophy in front of the kinship house. For my reward, I'm at least guaranteed not to be enticed to try again until next weekend, and get some sleep instead :>

This week will be the last DigiPen lab of the semester, and we have an MVP Summit event at Microsoft mid-week. Naturally as my workload around running our Gamefest conference mounts, there's more and more development work that I really want to get done piles up. Most of them are 'as time permits' tasks, but I'm excited to be doing more development work and less "trying to get the product managers that supposedly own the work to care" efforts. I do like the writing, and even like presenting, but I also really like to get a chance to code too.
