"You can never go home again, Oatman... but I guess you can shop there."
--- Grosse Pointe Blank

I usually consider having to check luggage a badge of shame. As a 'road warrior', I pack minimalist and stick to one roller bag and my messengers bag. This time, I'm coming back to camp. I managed to get a tent, sleeping bag, pillows, and clothing for the event into two checked bags and a carry-on backpack. It did mean waiting for luggage, but it was quick and everything showed up fine. It was pretty clear that TSA opened up one of my bags though as they were apparently freaked out by the rubber mallet in my tent bag. It was still there, but it was outside the tent bag.

By the time I got my luggage and rental car, it was dusk in Austin. While much of the year the weather in Texas is stifling, or at least damn humid, fall is just... amazing. Warm but not hot weather, cooling breezes to keep the humidity in check, amazing warm nights. Stepping out of the rental car in the Trudy's parking lot it felt wonderful, smelled like home, and even the sound was familiar. Specifically the sound of millions of ugly grackles filling the trees and making a tremendous racket as the sun sets. The meal was everything I remember and more. It's mostly because I don't get to eat Tex-Mex every three meals like I once did, but the tastes are just fabulous to come back to.

With the usual delays through DFW, I didn't make firm plans for tonight, but I was able to get a hold of [livejournal.com profile] silona on short notice. We hung out about two hours at the Spider-House. We both went to high-school together, and through the years we've moved in similar but distinct circles. I used to see her at Game Developer Conference regularly, but not so the past few years and it was good to get a chance to chat face-to-face. It also reminds me that there are in fact amazing, hot, interesting, technical, single women my age out there. I just need to find one that is (a) interested and (b) lives closer than 2300 miles away. In any case excellent company, fun conversation, and a great start to my vacation week.
