The HDTV arrived today. Tis beautimous. 1080p on my Xbox 360 rocks. It does a decent job with DVDs, but until I pick up an HD-DVD player (and of course start buying movies in format that could well turn out to be the next Beta-max) I will have to live with much up-scaling. I'll probably hold-off on any new DVD player until a nice, affordable BluRay/HD-DVD combo player appears on the market with HDMI out. I can just get the HD-DVD player that works with the Xbox 360 for like $150, but I don't have an Elite so no HDMI out without also getting a new Xbox 360 console.
For now component will do nicely.
In a related note, it occurs to me that it is actually pretty ineffective to have a 'midlife crisis house'. The whole 'penis-mobile' midlife crisis car thing really only works because it is a ostentatious show of wealth that one can take around town. I don't personally see why a woman would be turned on by a luxury car, much less flirt with a guy based purely on it. Perhaps they merely want to be seen in it in the hopes they can make other women feel jealous of them, or at try to get the guy to spend some of the money he clearly has (or perhaps had) to piss away on such a vehicle on them instead. Most people in the Western world like 'nice' things, but the whole premise here seems flawed. Having a ostentatious show of wealth in one's house doesn't really work as a portable display of one's prowess at earning income, and presumably you've already made some kind of connection with someone if they actually come over to said house and see it.
Granted most women would probably not be all that impressed by a sweet HDTV, although a gamer girl/media geek would be.
Update: In other good news, I don't need to give those Comcast people another dime to get HDTV service, and the DVR I have already supports it. The HDMI out works great, although obviously most channels are still not HD. Of course they've tried to get me to switch to their phone service TWICE today.
Update 2: HDTV player for the Xbox achieved, and an amazingly fun viewing of Serenity. For bizzare DRM reasons, I had to switch to a VGA cable for the Xbox 360 rather than component to actually get 1080p output from the player, but it looks fab.
