Split-Week
Jul. 5th, 2007 11:34 pmHaving a holiday in the middle of the week has made for a sequence of what feels like 2-day work-weeks. Lots of my fellow Softies decided it was a good time to take 4 days of vacation to get a full 9 days off in a row, and so it's a bit like Christmas in July at the office: there's barely anyone there. Lots of regular weekly meetings have been cancelled, which is fine by me.
I've spent the past two weeks working on samples for a new game audio API for both Windows and Xbox 360. It's the first real coding work I've done in some years, and I'm quite enjoying it. As a result, I've been putting in some long hours. Most of the time has been spent learning not one, but two completely arcane and distinct build systems since I'm working in both the Xbox XDK and DirectX SDK source trees. What's worse is that I also have to maintain Visual Studio .NET 2003 and Visual Studio 2005 projects in addition to the arcane systems. No wonder getting samples is so time-consuming. I'm also trying to deliver some key articles for our next DirectX SDK release, all while dealing with the daily randomization of pushing the Games for Windows branding technical support issues, getting ready for our big GameFest event in August, and the yearly and somewhat tiresome process of reviews.
On the 4th I had
beaq,
loree,
tithonium,
jeliza, and
drakemonger over along with the kids for a BBQ and generally a low-key sitting around the house on a too-warm-for-the-locals relaxing day. I really like having more than one human being in the house on occasion. After the party,
jeliza and I had a quite evening date watching The Dark Crystal and listening to my neighbors turn the area into Bagdad at the height of the air war in Operation Desert Storm. JRS are headed out of town this weekend on a familial-duty trip.
The party has left a fair amount of groceries in my fridge, and some tasty-tasty watermelon, so I'll be eating pretty well for the rest of the week.
I actually have the flooring material in finally and got a start again on the last of that project. Plan to make the final push on it this weekend. Blackberry bushes are taking over my yard again, and I've had another round of battle with them. They finally destroyed the fairly new hoe beyond repair--which turned out to be a lot less sturdy that I had assumed from my first inspection of it--, but I guess it counts as regular exercise.
Last weekend I cleaned the house. Any by clean the house, I mean literaly using soap and water to clean the exterior. I wanted to do some limited painting, so I had to clean it off a bit to start with, and I figured I might as well clean off all the vinyl elements as well. It meant playing outside with the water hose for hours, which as an OCD Picses was quite pleasing to me.
Due to a confluence of factors, I'm looking at getting a new range this week for the kitchen. Todd recommended some good ones, but naturally they are so high-end that Lowe's doesn't actually bother to have any in the store to look at despite the fact that they have them on their website and can order them pretty easily. It's vexing because I want to take advantage of this week's financing options there, but I don't want to drop $1600+ on a major appliance sight unseen.
