X-Men and X-Men 2 were remarkably good movies for stories based on the fantastic world of supermen/women comic-books. Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen give their roles and the setting as a whole a feeling of authenticity and depth that buoyed up what could have been a silly movie. For the most part, the cast and characters are fun, and the effects exciting. X-Men 2 ended with a bit of a unresolved cliffhanger, so I was definitely looking forward to the third installment.
Unfortunately the director of the first two movies left the project, and while X-Men: The Last Stand was enjoyable it lacked a certain tightness that I had hoped would still be there. Still fun overall, but not as good as I was hoping. The film ended with a bit of 'to be continued' silliness that was a bit too much like the end bits of horror films--there's a short scene after the credits that seemed more like a deleted scene.
Of course, most people who saw the film with me thought it was great so maybe it's just me. For "summer movie" fare, it is definitely worth watching.
Update: After a second viewing and knowing the film wasn't going to focus on what I had originally hoped for from a continuation of the X-Men series, I probably was a bit hard on it. As one critic said, the first half is actually quite good it just stumbles in the final half. Combined with a bit of jarring editing, it did fall short but was still good fun.
