Memorial Day
May. 31st, 2004 08:10 pmSpent a quiet day on my own, which was actually pretty nice. Slept in, finished rewatching the previous two Harry Potter DVDs, did some puttering around the house, and made a short excursion out to QFC. Not the most productive use of my day, but life's been short on "sitting around time", so it was nice to just slack. The next few weekends are pretty busy, so I'm not too worried about things staying too quiet for too long.
Personally I'm at a bit of a loss on what one "should" do on Memorial Day. I grew up in a military family living in base housing, and I know the kind of life those people often lead. I'm glad we have an all volunteer army, and that they are willing to serve so that those of us who don't wish to, don't have to. I still question the wisdom of our executive branch's use of the military much of the time, and more importantly I'm pissed to high hell that the Congress continues to choose to be so damn cowardly about doing their job of proper oversight of the executive's actions, particularly in this area. All these arguments about the 'activist judiciary' are bullshit in my mind... it all comes down to a Congress that refuses to properly address tough issues in this country because they are more worried about squeezing as many years out of the job as possible instead of doing the right thing in the time they have.
I can only hope that the loss of life this time around is not in vain, and that some good for all will eventually come out of this. In the meantime, I can only wish the soldiers luck and thank them for the sacrifices they've borne for us.
