Went to see Ani Difranco at the Pier last night with [livejournal.com profile] jeliza... It was a solo acoustic concert, so it was Ani at her best. Lots of new stuff, a number of songs from Evolve, and a few of her standards. She played a little over an hour and a half.

She had the weirdest opening act: "That One Guy from San Francisco and his Magic Pipe". It was basically a synth controller made out of a length of jointed pipe, two strings with guitar pick-ups and a few buttons with an attached drum, foot-petal drum, and a fog machine. It looked like a bong gone wrong. It was pretty cool, but definitely more performance art than strictly music. He played it with his hands, his arms, and a violin bow. He also played a saw (a rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" no less). At one point he used a credit-card to pick the string and played "Iron Man". His lyrics were stream-of-consciousness, and the only memorable song name was "Weasel Pot Pie". I think he said his CD was titled Songs in the Key of Bi-ach... Something worth seeing if you get a chance cause it was just too strange to miss...

Usual assortment of extremely cute tattooed 'angry grrls' in t-tops in attendance. They stripped out all the chairs in the center section and just left a big open space, so there were lots of people packed in towards the stage. As has become tradition, I ran into [livejournal.com profile] eogan at this Ani concert as well...

Editor's Note: Here's a link for "That One Guy..." Even has a video of one of his songs and his 'magic pipe' in action...
