Long but enjoyable day. Although I tried to get to bed a little earlier last night, I didn't manage to get to sleep and instead watched TV until after midnight. I was a little slow getting going this morning. I was originally going to an all-day course, and decided to rearrange things for my late start. By late afternoon I was having a really hard time staying awake, particularly since the sketch session I was in was a talk on a very academic problem of mapping fully connected 2D graphs onto 'n' genus subdivision surfaces followed by a talk on smoothing the non-zero set for non-differentiable implicit surfaces compositions. If you felt drowsy just hearing me describe it, it was even worse for me :>

Dinner was great as we returned to the steak place from our first night here. I then went to the SIGGRAPH reception and hung out with some Microsoft Research interns. All I can say is that (a) I'm thrilled there are in fact women studying C.S. and interested in graphics and (b) my academic research career would have turned out differently if there had been as many hot young girls in my C.S. program. They wandered off to Hollywood to club and crash one of the various SIGGRAPH-related private parties since girls can almost always find a way into such events and I bailed as they headed to the subway. I need to get some sleep for the day tomorrow, and frankly if the Clinton years taught me anything it is to watch out for interns--one of my coworkers suggested that the lesson was actually 'burn the dress' but I prefer a more generalized morality lesson, thank you.

I returned to the hotel and dropped by the bar to say goodnight to my coworkers. They were a bit tipsy when I had left for the reception, and had been in the bar for 2 hours. I managed to extricate myself after about half an hour and am about to get some sleep. I'll be sleeping in a bit tomorrow since my first session doesn't start until 10:30pm...
