I spent my first day unemployed between Sierra and Microsoft sleeping in, and then doing laundry. I had a late lunch at Alki Cafe and then went to see King Arthur at the Meridian 16 after reading the review of it in The Stranger. This evening I finished up the pre-orientation paperwork for Microsoft, watching Stargate SG-1 reruns, and keeping Koshka company.

I'll be out of town Wednesday through Sunday visiting Todd in NYC. Tomorrow will be some quality time with [livejournal.com profile] jeliza, which I'm very much looking forward to.

I called Andrea Sunday to wish her a Happy Birthday since I declined her offer to attend her party Saturday. I'm feeling the usual mix of emotions about her: glad I didn't end up going to an event that was probably going to be uncomfortable for me at best, sad that as important as maintaining friendships with the women I have relationships are to me that things are so uneasy between us. The call ended with the usual awkwardness with her catching herself saying the usual but meaningless "talk to you later"--since that has meant "talk to you next year"--and instead switched to "thanks for calling." It is always a tough line to walk between being true to one's feelings and accepting the reality that expressing some of those feelings serves no purpose at all.

I realized today that work is the activity that gives my life structure. I have no family, no pattern with a partnership at home--unless you count Koshka's little rituals of high-maintenance. My free days are spent trying to fill up time when those that I'd like to spend that time with are not available. Good thing I'm taking on a challenging job then to make that work time worth the investment of so much of my life's focus.
