The PBS Newshour had a recent spot on the Catholic bishops that want to not only withhold communion from politicians who support abortion rights, but anyone who votes for such a politician.

So since Americans are pretty evenly split on supporting abortion rights--which means, gasp!, there are Catholics who support abortion rights--, they want to use communion as a club to enforce alignment with the policies of the Church as set by the Pope. In fact, they want it to trump every other issue you can imagine: unjust war, death penalty, support of the poor, education, you name it. Of course the reasoning for it being "all-important" is based specifically on the pro-lifer interpretation of the issue...

One of the Catholics interviewed for the piece referred to anyone who supported abortion rights as an 'anti-lifer'. And yeah, one bishop is even using the 'Hitler card' in the argument, equating support of any politician who supports abortion rights as morally equivalent to Germans who supported Hitler.

At least there was one sane bishop interviewed for the piece who asked why the same bishops aren't serious about enforcing any other political issue that doesn't conform to the Church's teachings.

Damn do I miss Clinton's completely reasonable stand on this issue: "Abortion should be safe, legal, and rare." Of course, the Fundies love to ridicule it--"If abortion were a good thing, why should it be rare?" is an actual quote from these people, seems they find ridicule the best counter to any logical or scientific-based argument--, and it is just too darn centrist for anyone in these days of total polarization...

What does it say about the state of national politics these days when I yearn for a greasy used-car salesman womanizer with questionable taste in mistresses to be back in the Oval Office? Time to go read JohnKerryIsADoucheBagButImVotingForHimAnyway.com again...
