Melissa Ferrick
May. 5th, 2004 12:18 pmHad a great time at Melissa Ferrick's show at the Tractor Tavern last night with
jeliza. She's coming out with a new album next month, The Other Side, which I'm very much looking forward to getting. Melissa seemed a lot more relaxed this show than the first time I saw her at the same venue last year. It was a little less intense a performance--last time she started the show with fast song after fast song one right after another without a break for nearly 30 minutes--, but still a lot of good energy.
She did have a few problems like a string breaking during Freedom, so she just retuned (on-the-fly) and played Ani's Untouchable Face instead. She later tried to sing Break the Mirror on request and realized she couldn't remember the lyrics and just dropped into something else. She did her usual extended "X-rated" rendition of Drive, which was playful and amusing--when
tavalon saw her with me last year, her comment afterwards was "I don't have to have sex with her now, because I know everything there is to know."--and the predominately lesbian crowd quite enjoyed it. She even blended it a bit with Prince's Darling Nikki, which was surreal but entertaining.
Because
jeliza had class, we missed most of Ann Heaton's opening set, but I'm glad we didn't miss any of Melissa's act. She's playing Portland tonight, but I think work wouldn't appreciate me skipping tomorrow morning to catch it :> Since I already have four albums that cover most of her published songs, I only picked up one more, Everything I Need. Now, where do I preorder that new one?
