I don't make them often, but I did manage to make tonight's Seattle Sputnik meeting, the local chapter of the International Game Developer's Association. Since it lost regular space at Microsoft a few years back, it has been hosted mostly out of DigiPen University, which results in very heavy attendance by students and not many industry people. Tonight's presentation was a test-run of a GDC talk that I had conflicts with in my schedule at the actual conference, so it was a chance to catch it after all. Good presentation, followed by much 'shop talk'. Still, there were almost no industry people there except for the speaker, myself, and a couple from Vancouver that do sound design freelance.

Every now and then Microsoft offers to sponsor a meeting and suddenly the industry people come out of the wood-work. It is hard to tell if it is the students scaring away the industry people, the general over-work and stress that occurs in the industry, or if it is just the local Seattle cultural phenomenon of isolation.

Oh well. I don't go regularly either, but I do keep an eye out for interesting topics like tonight's... Next month's will likely be a GDC recap, which I'll try to make.
