GDC Day 3

The expo started Wednesday, which marks the beginning of the full show. Spent yesterday in face-to-face developer meetings, checking out the booths, helping with work-shops, and attending sessions: pretty much my day every day through the end of the week.

I did make it to a keynote session with Ronald Moore speaking about the new BSG. My first reaction was the same as most people: "What the hell is this guy doing speaking at a game conference?" Ronald started out by saying he had pretty much the same reaction. The thrust of his talk was about the process he took in reinvisioning an existing franchise, essentially translating it for a new medium, and the analysis he made of what made the essence of the original show. Since a lot of people are working on licensed-property games, it was actually pretty relevant. He did reveal some details of the longer-term plans for the show, and the audience Q/A provided some amusing fanboy moments.

After the conference wrapped up for the day, I went out to dinner with an old friend from Austin (Tim Little) who was a partner in my game company back in the mid-90s. It was a fun conversation, but the end result definitely reminded me that it was a long time ago. His eldest daughter who was six when I met her is about to start college. The rest of the evening passed fairly quietly, as I neither had invites to the Sony party nor any interest in trying to scam my way in. Given that we have lots going on tonight, I figured I could use the sleep anyhow.
