As Rhys put it "The book did not take 2 hours to read." cuddlyeconomist has read the book, while I have not, but she assures me the book had very little of the violence, yelling, and destruction present in the movie. It had a lot more 'adaptation' content to make the 48 page book into a movie.

It was beautifully shot, and probably makes more sense if you were a little boy rather than a little girl. As willful_zephyr's review put it, it was too much "Where the Emo Things Are".
