Olympics Trip
A few years back, my brother and I went out to the Olympic Peninsula for a weekend camping trip. We drove all the way around the north end and went to check out the Rialto Beach area. It was pretty amazing.
This weekend I took
cuddlyeconomist and Rhys out to the same beach. On the way, we dropped by Forks to see that a cross-marketing exec vomited all over the once sleepy logging town. There were at least three Twilight-themed chotskies shops in a town of about 3500. As
cuddlyeconomist commented, it looked like a scene out of Spaceballs and we'd have not been surprised to see "Team Edward" or "I have a weakness for shiny boys" toilet-paper for sale. We actually found out from a local a bit later that all the shops are operated by 'out-of-towners' who are only there to make a mint, and don't have much in the way of local community involvement. As the native put it, "She's never even been here. She just looked us up on the Internet."
It was a long drive and just an overnight stay, but it was a bit late in the year and very cold at night. Thankfully REI mummy bags kept us all toasty warm at night, but it was definable a lot colder than Rhys is used to for camping. We'll go again next summer when it' sa bit warmer, and maybe stay in the Hoh Rain Forest which is a bit warmer.
