Chronicles of Narnia

The movie is almost but not entirely unlike being kidnapped and brainwashed by a busload of Jesus-freaks.

With the exception of a references to Christmas, an appearance by a particular mythic character, and the subtly messianic subplots, the film is actually rather secular. My understanding is that this fits with CS Lewis' original work which doesn't get obviously messianic/Christian until the last book.

Aside from a few nit-picks (um, monarchies don't work with TWO Kings and TWO Queens, particularly not when the line starts with brothers and sisters...) I quite enjoyed it. Tilda Swinton was creepy and awesome as always, the effects were at least as believable as The Lord of the Rings, and the cinematography and musical score were great. They used a lot of different effects houses, but they did have WETA-created armor and creature work.

What's not to love about a cavalry charge lead by a pride of cougars?

Reading the credits I discovered why I liked the music: one song was performed by Alanis Morrisette and another by Imogen Heap. It lacks in gore and blood like any Disney flic aimed at kids, but doesn't puss out on the violence of war.

Nicely done.
